How to read it
The range is wide on purpose. Product fill alone runs from $1.50 to $12.00 per unit across product types, and packaging from $0.50 to $5.00 per unit — so the same launch can legitimately cost several times more or less depending on what you make and how you pack it. The low end assumes the cheapest published figures on every bucket at once; the high end assumes the most expensive. Most real quotes land somewhere inside, not at either edge.
Three things narrow the range fast. First, units per product: nearly every cost is priced per run or per unit, and minimums decide your floor. Second, the path: custom formulation adds development fees before a single unit is filled, and two sample rounds instead of one. Third, packaging: stock packaging in standard sizes is cheapest, while custom containers, metallic finishes, and airless pumps cost more and can pass the published band — that is why the premium tier shows an open-ended high end.
For context, the published first-run bands in our cost guide are roughly $1,500–$10,000 for a stock-formula launch and $5,000–$25,000+ for a custom-formulation launch. There is no separate published band for semi-custom work; treat it as sitting between the two. Compare quotes like-for-like — same products, same units, same buckets — and treat any quote that will not itemize these buckets as a warning sign.
Not a quote. Every figure above is a general industry pattern, not a price from any manufacturer. Use the estimate to judge real quotes, then get itemized quotes on the same basis before committing to a launch size.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the estimated range so wide?
Because the published per-unit ranges are wide: product fill alone runs from $1.50 to $12.00 per unit across product types, and packaging from $0.50 to $5.00 per unit. The calculator shows the full published range so you can see the floor and the ceiling; real quotes narrow it to one number.
Does the calculator include marketing costs?
No. Launch marketing is a separate budget and is deliberately kept out of the production math. Mixing the two is how founders discover they can afford to make a product but not to sell it.
Is this a quote from a manufacturer?
No. Every figure is a general industry pattern from our cost guide, not a price from any manufacturer. Use the estimate to judge quotes: get every quote itemized on the same basis — same products, units, and packaging — or the totals will mislead you.
What changes the total most?
Units per product and the launch path. Nearly every cost is priced per run or per unit, and minimums decide your floor. Switching from a stock formula to custom formulation adds development fees of $2,000 to $15,000+ per formula before production starts.
